Get NBA Rumors Via RSS
August 24, 2008
HoopsAvenue is proud to introduce RSS feeds for our NBA Rumors page. These actually went live about a week ago, but, in case you haven’t noticed, you can now subscribe via RSS to NBA Rumors for the league, an individual team, or even an individual player. It’s up to you which teams and players you want to read rumors on. If you’re not familiar with RSS, it is a new technology that allows you to read online content without actually visiting a website. Here’s how to get set up:
- Download an RSS reader such as FeedDemon (this is what I use) or you can just use a Google Reader account, MyYahoo, or something like that (they all read RSS).
- Look for RSS icons on website or on the Location toolbar of your browser.

- When you see this icon and want to subscribe, click it and you will be presented with subscription options.
- Choose a subscription option such as subscribing with FeedDemon or Google Reader and follow the instructions.
That’s it!
You’ll see one of these RSS icons
on every single rumors page we have here on HoopsAvenue so feel free to subscribe to any of them and you’ll receive just those rumors related to that team or player.

Free Agent Spotlight: Josh Smith
July 11, 2008
The dominoes are falling fast in free agency this summer. We’ve already got Gilbert Arenas re-signing in Washington, Elton Brand going to Philadelphia, Corey Maggette and Baron Davis swapping teams, and Lebron James going to New Jersey (oh wait, that’s not for 2 more years). Josh Smith, though, hasn’t made a decision yet. Mostly that’s because he’s just outside the top tier of free agents, but, after this season’s playoff performance, maybe he should be more of a priority? Regardless, the man is going to make big money and he’s still seeking a monster deal, and that is what makes his free agency so interesting. Nobody doubts Josh Smith’s athleticism or ability to put up numbers, but is he the kind of player that can carry a team? It looks like the Sixers don’t think so now that they passed up Smith and sunk their money into Elton Brand. Most teams would probably do the same going for the reliable big man over the flashy athlete.
So, the Hawks are facing a pretty big question these days as they try to decide what to do with Josh Smith. With the Clippers losing Brand and Maggette, they are probably going to make a big offer to Smith. They’re going to make a big offer, it’s just a matter of whether it goes to Smith or Emeka Okafor. Smith would seemingly be the better fit for the LA market and that seems to be how Donald Sterling makes his decisions most of the time. Now, Smith is restricted so assuming he does get a big offer from the Clippers, the Hawks would have 7 days to match it. Should the Hawks go all-in on Josh Smith?
If I’m the Hawks, I do it. It’s true Smith is young and mostly unproven, but we’ve seen what he can do in the playoffs and for the city of Atlanta. Barring an injury, there should be a lot of exciting games and a pretty good team in Atlanta for years to come. He is not going to be Lebron or Duncan, but neither is anyone else on the market right now and you can’t attract them to a listless franchise anyway. Atlanta probably never will be a championship team with Josh Smith as its centerpiece, but when you’re putting “championship” and “Atlanta” in the same sentence, you’re probably dreaming anyways. Don’t ruin a good thing, Hotlanta. Re-sign Josh Smith.
Free Agent Spotlight: Gilbert Arenas
July 1, 2008
Today is the first day teams can begin negotiations with their players and the word is that the Wizards are set to offer Gilbert Arenas $100 million over 6 years. Sounds like a lot of money (and, duh, it is), but Agent Zero had indicated he was looking for the max, which would be $124 million over that same period. No word yet on what Arenas plans to do, but considering he’s coming off an injury, it’s doubtful he’ll get a much better offer from another team.
Re-signing with Washington would be the easy thing to do. Arenas has said he wants to stay in DC and just wanted to “test the market”, but plenty a player have “tested the market” and found a better contract elsewhere. Arenas has stated repeatedly he will only come back if the Wizards also re-sign Antawn Jamison this off-season and they just did re-sign Jamison for four more years so the odds look good for Washington. “He said he’d take less money if they got me, and they got me,” Jamison said. “So I think everything will get worked out with Gilbert.”
The Lakers and Clippers have also been reportedly interested in Arenas at one time or another, but both situations don’t seem likely anymore. The Lakers would have to make some pretty big changes to make the money available for Arenas which they are unlikely to want to do considering they are coming off a Finals appearance. The Clippers, on the other hand, would want to work a sign-and-trade most likely involving Elton Brand, but now that the Wizards have re-signed Jamison, Washington is in a much better position to win in Gilbert’s eyes. Don’t hold your breath, LA fans.
Where do you think Agent Zero will wind up?
