NBA Power Rankings - Week 10

December 30, 2008

Well, Christmas Day sure muddied the waters a bit as the Celtics and Cavs both looked very beatable with the Celts actually going down in Los Angeles.  You’ll have to check out the power rankings below to find out how the top 3 shake out this week.  So who’s streaking?  Well, the Knicks, not surprisingly, have lost six straight and plummeted to the bottom of the Atlantic Division while the Spurs and Pistons are heating up.  Here’s this week’s power rankings:

1. Boston Celtics

2. Cleveland Cavaliers

3. Los Angeles Lakers

4. Orlando Magic

5. San Antonio Spurs

6. Houston Rockets

7. Atlanta Hawks

8. Detroit Pistons

9. New Orleans Hornets

10. Portland Trailblazers

11. Dallas Mavericks

12. Phoenix Suns

13. Denver Nuggets

14. Utah Jazz

15. Miami Heat

16. New Jersey Nets

17. Milwaukee Bucks

18. Chicago Bulls

19. Charlotte Bobcats

20. Toronto Raptors

21. Golden State Warriors

22. Philadelphia 76ers

23. Memphis Grizzlies

24. Indiana Pacers

25. New York Knicks

26. Washington Wizards

27. Los Angeles Clippers

28. Minnesota Timberwolves

29. Sacramento Kings

30. Oklahoma City Thunder

Yep, Boston is still #1 and the Lakers still #3.  Remember, the game was in L.A. and Boston’s still got the best road record in the league.  We forgave the Cavs for a poor Christmas Day performance, too, being a holiday and all.

Pick of the Week: Magic (-9.5) at Timberwolves

December 27, 2008

Now pay attention!  Pick of the Week is 5-1 now as the Pacers actually beat the Sixers straight up last week when all they had to do was lose by less than 11.  You could be making good money just making our picks…just sayin’.  This week we’re picking the Magic in Minnesota against the Timberwolves.  The Magic are 9.5 point favorites and need to win this one by double digits to cover, but we are expecting a blowout.  Orlando is coming off a Christmas Day drubbing of the Hornets and we expect that to continue in Minnesota.  Here’s why we like this one:

  • Orlando is the better and rested team.  Although they are at home, Minnesota was in New York last night so they’ll be the tired ones.  Not to mention the Magic should beat the Timberwolves anywhere, any place, any time this season.
  • The Magic have been winning with defense, holding teams to 82.5 points on 36% shooting in their last 4 games.  Minnesota might not crack 80 which means it will be a blowout.

It’s pretty obvious most people are going to expect the Magic to win this game so it’s just a matter of the margin.  Margins tend to be conservative when you’re looking at a blowout and we think this one is a bit over-conservative so its a good pick.

NBA Power Rankings - Week 9

December 22, 2008

With the Lakers dropping a few while the Celtics and Cavs continue to roll, we’ve, not surprisingly, mixed up our top 3 a little bit this week.  We’re also starting to wonder about the Pistons…they can’t seem to put it together with AI in the mix.  Oh, and can anyone explain why Nenad Krstic was so eager to join the 3-25 Oklahoma City Thunder?  Lucky for the other bottom-dwellers though as the Thunder could be a smidge bit better and lose out on the top lottery spot.  Without further adieu, here are this week’s power rankings:

1. Boston Celtics

2. Cleveland Cavaliers

3. Los Angeles Lakers

4. Orlando Magic

5. New Orleans Hornets

6. Houston Rockets

7. San Antonio Spurs

8. Atlanta Hawks

9. Portland Trailblazers

10. Phoenix Suns

11. Denver Nuggets

12. Utah Jazz

13. Miami Heat

14. Dallas Mavericks

15. Detroit Pistons

16. New Jersey Nets

17. Milwaukee Bucks

18. Chicago Bulls

19. Indiana Pacers

20. Philadelphia 76ers

21. New York Knicks

22. Charlotte Bobcats

23. Memphis Grizzlies

24. Toronto Raptors

25. Los Angeles Clippers

26. Golden State Warriors

27. Sacramento Kings

28. Oklahoma City Thunder

29. Washington Wizards

30. Minnesota Timberwolves

Pick of the Week: Pacers (+10.5) at 76ers

December 20, 2008

The Pick of the Week was correct again last week as the Knicks not only covered the spread, but defeated the Kings handily.  Not to brag, but we’re 4-1 now so I hope you’re paying attention and making some money off the picks.  This week we’re picking the Pacers, a 10.5 point underdog, at Philadelphia.  We’re actually surprised Philly is such a hefty favorite in this one, which makes it an ideal pick.  This is a very risky pick though.  Read on to find out why…

  • Danny Granger, Marquis Daniels, and Troy Murphy missed Indiana’s game last night with flu-like symptoms.  Obviously this is why we’ve got a 10.5 point line.  These 3 guys may or may not play tonight, but we’re going to go out on a limb and guess they play.  You don’t get paid what you do to miss two straight games with the flu!
  • Elton Brand is out.  Yes, the 76ers won the game he went down and won their 1 game without him, but there’s no way they are better without Brand.  They were 10-14 with him and we don’t think any teams of that caliber deserve being double digit favorites even if it is at home against a weaker team.
  • The Pacers are back on track.  After 6 straight losses, Indiana won two straight before losing last night in double overtime.  We wouldn’t say they’re hot, but they should be competitive against a team like the Sixers.

So there ya go.  This is a risky pick, but unless the Pacers are missing all 3 of the previously mentioned flu sufferers, it’s hard to think the Sixers are going to win by double digits.

NBA Power Rankings - Week 8

December 15, 2008

The Celtics have won 14 straight now and look pretty unbeatable so we decided to bump them up to the top spot this week.  The Cavs and Magic are still looking strong, but look at those surging Spurs!  It looks like the Grizzlies have decided to turn around their season too, winning 4 straight.  Here are this week’s power rankings:

1. Boston Celtics

2. Los Angeles Lakers

3. Cleveland Cavaliers

4. Orlando Magic

5. San Antonio Spurs

6. Denver Nuggets

7. New Orleans Hornets

8. Houston Rockets

9. Utah Jazz

10. Portland Trailblazers

11. Dallas Mavericks

12. Atlanta Hawks

13. Phoenix Suns

14. Detroit Pistons

15. Miami Heat

16. New Jersey Nets

17. New York Knicks

18. Chicago Bulls

19. Toronto Raptors

20. Memphis Grizzlies

21. Philadelphia 76ers

22. Milwaukee Bucks

23. Los Angeles Clippers

24. Golden State Warriors

25. Indiana Pacers

26. Charlotte Bobcats

27. Sacramento Kings

28. Washington Wizards

29. Minnesota Timberwolves

30. Oklahoma City Thunder

Pick of the Week: Knicks (+1) at Kings

December 13, 2008

So this week I’m actually going to pick the Knicks as they play in Sacramento.  Typically I would stay away from picking the Knicks for everything, but a couple things make this an attractive pick this week.  So pay attention since I’m 3-1 on my weekly picks now as the Jazz lost by less than 6 to the Suns last week.  Here’s why I like the Knicks:

  • It’s a back-to-back for the Kings while the Knicks will have had 2 days of rest.  Plus, the Kings had to travel back home from LA last night.
  • The Kings are just not playing winning basketball, at home or on the road, having lost 12 of their last 14.
  • The Knicks, despite the jokes, have been playing respectable basketball for a quarter of the season now at 10-12 under Mike D’antoni so when they are underdogs against bad teams, it’s not a bad idea to consider them.
  • The Knicks play at a fast pace and hit the century mark frequently under D’antoni.  The Kings with tired legs may struggle to keep up.

It’s rare that you’ll see a team as bad as the Kings favored in a back-to-back against a rested opponent so put all that together and consider placing your bet on New York tonight.

NBA Power Rankings - Week 7

December 9, 2008

For the first time this year, the top 5 remain unchanged.  We were a bit skeptical if Portland would hang in there, but they showed their mettle winning 4 of 5 road games in the East with the only loss being to Boston.   The bottom of the power rankings is pretty much the same, too, as the bad teams haven’t gotten any better (in fact, their coaches are dropping like flies these days).   Here are this week’s rankings…

1. Los Angeles Lakers

2. Boston Celtics

3. Cleveland Cavaliers

4. Orlando Magic

5. Portland Trailblazers

6. New Orleans Hornets

7. Denver Nuggets

8. Houston Rockets

9. Dallas Mavericks

10. San Antonio Spurs

11. Detroit Pistons

12. Atlanta Hawks

13. Phoenix Suns

14. Utah Jazz

15. New Jersey Nets

16. Miami Heat

17. Milwaukee Bucks

18. Chicago Bulls

19. Philadelphia 76ers

20. New York Knicks

21. Toronto Raptors

22. Indiana Pacers

23. Charlotte Bobcats

24. Memphis Grizzlies

25. Los Angeles Clippers

26. Golden State Warriors

27. Washington Wizards

28. Sacramento Kings

29. Minnesota Timberwolves

30. Oklahoma City Thunder

Pick of the Week: Jazz (+6) at Suns

December 6, 2008

Last week’s pick was another success as the Nuggets ended up beating the Timberwolves by 9.  When I made the pick, the line was at 4, but had creeped up to 5.5 by game time so its always a good idea to get in when the line is most favorable.

This week, I’m taking the Jazz (+6) at Suns.  The Suns are on a 4 game losing streak and appear to be out of the sync.  They’ve actually lost their last 4 by double digits so its hard to imagine they are going to suddenly turn it around and beat the Jazz by more than 6 even though they are at home! Here are some factors to consider for this one:

  • The Jazz are coming off a 27 point beatdown of the Raptors last night so they’ve got to be feeling good.  Yes, it’s a back-to-back, but the Jazz should be able to keep this one close which is all they need to do with a 6 point spread.
  • Carlos Boozer is most likely going to miss his 10th straight game, but the Jazz are still a respectable 5-4 in those 9 games he’s missed.  Plus, if he plays, it’s an added bonus the linesmakers didn’t see coming.
  • The Suns are in a funk.  It’s worth mentioning again this is a team that has lost 4 straight, including 2 at home so they’re easy to bet against right now.

Hey, so I’m 2-1 so far on my pics.  Maybe you should go with this one?  Make sure to do your own analysis though and there’s a whole slate of games tonight so find the one or maybe more that work for you.

4 days down, 3 to go.

I’m watching the Suns-Mavs game right now and I hope you had Dirk Nowitzki on your fantasy roster!  He’s lighting it up.  There’s only two games on the schedule tonight so there’s a good chance Dirk will be the top performer.

Going into tonight, here’s the top 5 in the hunt for NBA2K9:

1. Rich for 3 - 430.41

2. mcgees mavs - 423.81

3. Davison Pistons - 406.61
